UK-based thermal insulation cover manufacturers Enviro-Pod have launched a unique internal roll cage lining which is currently being used to transport chilled goods throughout Spain for a major supermarket chain.

The new innovation is designed to fit within a roll-cage, allowing produce to be sealed at a chilled temperature for long periods, without the need for electricity or any other assistance. Having the material secured inside the cage gives it protection by reducing wear and tear and reducing the chance of produce becoming unsecured in transit.

Independent tests have proven that Chill Pod’s use of NASA’s Flectalon technology can result in a considerable reduction on fuel costs and the carbon footprint of transport companies and storage units, by maintaining temperature, without the need for an additional fuel source. By removing refrigeration from delivery vehicles, companies are also able to increase their distribution capacity, reducing the number of journeys required.

The unique insulating properties of the covers are constructed from a flat polymer sheet, coated with a thin layer of aluminium which combines conventional trapped air thermal insulation with multiple mirror finish surfaces to maintain the correct temperature of the product contained within. When tested against a competitor the unique Chill Pod design saw an increase of only 3.4 degrees over a 12 hour period, compared to 7 degrees by a leading competitor.

Traditionally the adhesive technology used in the mattress manufacturing process has utilised an adhesive designed for use in packaging. Whilst it does the job, the traditional packaging adhesive lacks flexibility and can ultimately affect the standard of the finished product and in turn the quality of the night’s sleep offered.

Adhesive specialists KMS have developed and gained accreditation for a new generation of hot melt adhesive, specifically for mattress manufacturers.

The new hot melt Intact® H906 can be used in all types of existing hot melt system and has been specially developed for manufacturers who require a superior pocket sprung mattress assembly. The unique adhesive has exceptional bonding properties to non-woven materials, PU foam and textiles. It has the correct open and setting time for automatic pocket spring assembly machinery and melts easily in the glue tank.

In addition, unlike standard hot melts, Intact® H906 remains highly flexible which helps prevent the cracking noise and poor adhesion that is commonplace with inferior grades of hot melt glue, such as those designed for use in packaging that have been traditionally used in pocket sprung manufacture.

Intact ®H906 is already used by leading mattress manufacturers who have found that not only does it provide a stronger bond; it has also improved the sound of the mattress, eliminating the cracking noise associated with other hot melts. Intact ®H906 has passed the manufacturers tests when rolling the mattress for packing, with the adhesive bond remaining strong and flexible.

With the fruit, vegetable and flower industry’s focus on waste and ultimately reducing costs, Fresh Pod technology has been rigorously tested and proven to increase the storage time of English Savoy Cabbage for between 6-8 weeks without the need to introduce chemicals or expensive ozone producing systems.

Lankfer Ltd, based near Wisbech and a supplier of cabbages, cauliflowers and other fresh produce to wholesalers and the retail market, has installed a Fresh Pod EC3 filter machine within its cold store which has succeeded in reducing the presence of 99% of the ethylene, given off naturally by the cabbages and responsible for accelerating the ripening process. As well as extending the freshness of the produce by up to eight weeks, the Fresh Pod system also kills invisible airborne spores and moulds which are also major contributors to premature ripening and ultimately increased wastage.

The Fresh Pod system has extended the English produce season for Lankfer giving them the ability to extend their supplies of English grown produce into the retail market. Fresh Pod’s completely natural solution gives customers fresh local produce and reduces waste at source cutting Lankfers environmental impact – reducing imports and ultimately cutting costs.
